The things that might interest you or that you want to say “yes” to are probably infinite. The time and energy you have, though, is finite.
So you have to choose, which means you have to prioritise. This doesn’t make you any less ambitious; in fact, it may just refine your ambitions.
How do you choose what stays and what goes?
You need to work out what really matters to you. There are many ways to do this. Greg McKeown, in his book Essentialism, recommends the following approach:
1) Do less but do it better. Cut out the less important things.
2) Reject the notion that you should complete everything. Choose a specific direction in which you can excel.
3) Constantly question yourself and update your plans accordingly. It is an ongoing process of deciding what to drop and asking yourself, “Is this my highest and best use?”
4) Ensure that the changes are put into place and commit to action.
